Idle Rants and Ramblings
Give Me Money or Your Life

Really? In 2010? Companies still put the lives of their employees at risk for profit? I thought that ended decades ago with the rise of unions. I’m not talking about poor working conditions. Or overtime pay. Or having to work through lunch. I’m talking about life. And death. Not movie death. Real death. The kind that’s permanent. There are two stories in the news right now about people dying on the job. Not police officers, fire fighters or soldiers who knowingly and selflessly put their lives on the line every day for other people. No, these are people who believe they are reasonably safe from dying when they go to work. The oil rig workers in the Gulf are getting far more attention than the Chinese workers at an electronics manufacturer that makes cell phones. But either way, human beings are dying to make others rich. And sadly, they’re not the only ones. Other industries do the same thing. This is done to enable the most ruthless and unethical living beings on the planet the opportunity to live in gargantuan mansions, and have a spare mansion or two to use for vacations. We fool ourselves into believing that we put criminals in jail. But I’d much rather let all the pot users back on the streets and lock up all the CEOs who have a complete lack of conscience. Amazing. We lock up people who have done nothing more than dry out some leaves, roll them up and smoke them to feel good. But the people who knowingly put lives on the line to pad their own pockets continue to roam free. Disgusting.

Maybe I’m “old fashioned” but really, do people need to wear print T-shirts (concert, liquor, thinly veiled suggestive slogans) and battered sneakers to work? Is a decent shirt and shoes really that horrible?

I (finally) went to see a 3D movie this past weekend. It was stunning, as I’m sure everyone else already knows. Like many people, I stopped going to see movies in theaters because they hit DVD so quickly. And, of course, for all the other reasons people cite when they watch movies at home: cheap popcorn, clean bathroom, no annoying audience chatter, inexpensive home surround sound, etc. But, I left the theater thinking, there’s finally a reason to go to movie theaters again. So, when I mentioned this to a friend, she told me 3D ticket prices were going up in a big way. A quick Google search netted the above link. They just don’t get it. They finally find a way to get people back in theaters, and they follow that up with the perfect plan to keep them home again. 3D is stunning, but not that $tunning. Morons.

We Shall See

So, this is where I’ll rant, complain and just mutter to myself. (No one will really read this, right?) Well, I guess we’ll see what sorts of things bug (or amuse) me enough to spend time writing them down. (And by we, I mean me. Right? Hmm, maybe not.)
